Synopsis
WTI crude oil is a light crude oil from West Texas in the U.S. The crude oil futures contract has good liquidity and high price transparency, and is one of the three benchmark prices in the world crude oil market. All crude oil produced in or sold to the U.S. is priced against the light, sweet WTI benchmark. WTI crude oil futures were produced in 1983. From a historical perspective, the deregulation of crude oil prices by the U.S. government in January 1981 changed the pattern of crude oil markets in the U.S. and the world, especially with regard to the trading volume and spot price transparency of West Texas crude oil. Significantly, Cushing became the spot delivery location for new paper contracts. Due to the high liquidity and transparency of the contract, its price has gradually become the benchmark price in the international market.
