The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA, Dow (/ˈdaʊ/), referred to as "DJI") was created by The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones & Company co-founder Charles Henry Dow , and a stock market index named after him and his business partner and statistician Edward Jones. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is not a weighted arithmetic average and does not represent the market value of its constituent companies, but rather the average of the sum of the prices of one share of each constituent company. is a price-weighted measure of the stock market index of 30 prominent companies listed on the U.S. stock exchange. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ranks second among U.S. market indexes, behind only the Dow Jones Transportation Average (DJTA).
