On August 18, a new wave of attacks targeted the DeFi ecosystem, with the Exactly protocol compromised for almost $7.3 million, but Harbor's team is currently assessing the amount stolen.

According to blockchain security firms DeDotFi and PeckShield, the DeFi protocols Exactly and Harbor were compromised on August 18 in two different — and apparently unconnected — attacks.

On-chain evidence shows that 4,323.6 Ether, valued at roughly $7.3 million at the time of writing, was stolen from Exactly Protocol. The hackers then used the Across Protocol to connect 1,490 ETH to the Ethereum network and the Optimism Bridge to connect 2,832.92 ETH to the Ethereum network.

Exactly is a cryptocurrency lender on the Optimism network. Initial reports stated that approximately 7,160 ETH worth nearly $12 million had been stolen, although this figure was eventually reduced. According to Exactly: the attacker targeted the DebtManager peripheral contract.

The protocol filed a police report and is attempting to interact with the attackers in order to recover the stolen assets, according to its staff on X (previously Twitter).

In another security incident, the interchain stablecoin protocol Harbor revealed that it had been the victim of an attack that resulted in the loss of cash stored on its stable-mint, as well as the stOSMO, LUNA, and WMATIC vaults. At the time of writing, the total amount of crypto assets stolen was unknown. Harbor is claimed to be tracing funds and calculating overall losses.

The attacks come after a slew of security issues in the DeFi ecosystem in recent weeks. On July 30, a weakness in three versions of the Vyper programming language resulted in the theft of over $61 million from Curve Finance stablecoin pools. Earn.Finance was compromised in the last few days, with at least $287,000 in ETH taken, in addition to $2.1 million in damages experienced by Zunami Protocol in another breach.
