Spain IBEX35

The Spanish IBEX35 index is Spain's most important stock market indicator, which reflects the stock price performance of the 35 most liquid Spanish companies listed on the Madrid Stock Exchange. The IBEX35 Index is a market capitalization weighted index that is adjusted twice a year to ensure its representativeness and relevance.

The full English name of the IBEX35 index is Iberia Index 35, which means the index of the Iberian Peninsula, because Spain and Portugal together form the Iberian Peninsula. The abbreviation of IBEX35 index is INDI. You can use this code to query its real-time market and historical trends on Google Finance and other financial platforms.

The constituent stocks of the IBEX35 index cover all areas of the Spanish economy, including banking, telecommunications, energy, construction, services, etc. The largest constituent stock is Spanish bank Santander, accounting for about 15%; followed by Spanish telecommunications giant Telefonica, accounting for about 10%; and the third is Spain's largest energy company Iberdrola (Iberdrola), accounting for about 8%.

The IBEX35 index is calculated by multiplying the market capitalization of each component stock by its corresponding weight and then dividing it by a benchmark value. The result is the index value. The benchmark value is set based on the closing price on December 29, 1989, when the IBEX35 index was 3,000 points. Therefore, if the current IBEX35 index is 9,300 points, it means that since 1989, the market value of its constituent stocks has increased by 210%.

The IBEX35 index not only reflects the trend of the Spanish stock market, but also affects the development of the Spanish economy and politics. For example, in October 2017, the controversial independence referendum held in Catalonia triggered a serious political crisis, causing the IBEX35 index to plummet by nearly 10%, hitting its lowest point in nearly a year. On the contrary, in November 2020, as news about the successful development of the new crown vaccine boosted market confidence, the IBEX35 index rose by nearly 14%, setting the largest weekly increase in history.
